Stripe Held My Funds — Then How They Finally Released Them Stripe held my funds for months — sharing what actually worked Hey everyone, I wanted to share a real experience in case it helps other founders or small business owners who might end up in a similar situation. This is not a rant and not legal advice — just a firsthand account. ⸻ What happened (short version) Stripe closed my business account, citing “high risk.” Account closures happen — that part wasn’t the main issue. The problem was the funds already in the account. These were my own earned funds, not customer deposits. I work with Booking.com, so these were B2B settlement payouts for completed stays — fully legitimate revenue, not advance customer payments. No chargebacks. No disputes. No negative balance. Yet the funds were blocked. ⸻ No clear timeline, no written answer What made things worse was the lack of clarity. • Stripe did not give a clear written timeline. • There was no official email saying “we’ll hold funds for X days.” • The only mention of a timeframe came informally on X (Twitter), where “around 120 days” was mentioned — nothing binding. Support tickets were vague or quietly closed. At that point, I had no real idea whether this would take weeks or forever. ⸻ How I found out about the “120 days” Only after escalating the case to the UK Financial Ombudsman Service did I learn something important: Stripe can hold funds for up to 120 days, but that’s a maximum, not open-ended. That was the first time the situation had an actual framework. ⸻ “Available” doesn’t mean “paid” After those months, Stripe eventually released the funds internally. The balance showed as “available.” But no payout was initiated. No date. No explanation. Just silence. This went on long enough that it caused real problems: • cash-flow issues • unpaid partners • canceled contracts • a lot of unnecessary stress ⸻ What finally worked I filed a new escalation, focusing specifically on this point: Released and available funds were not being paid out within a reasonable timeframe. Shortly after that: • a payout was created • the status changed to “on the way” • the funds were transferred successfully Once the right issue was framed, things moved fast. ⸻ Why I’m sharing this A few takeaways I wish I’d known earlier: • “Available” doesn’t always mean “about to be paid” • Silence is often a risk-management strategy, not an accident • Escalation isn’t being aggressive — sometimes it’s the only way forward • There’s a big difference between withholding funds and not executing a payout The money eventually arrived — but the months of uncertainty were the real cost. ⸻ Happy to help If you’re dealing with something similar and have questions, feel free to comment or DM. I’m happy to share more details about what worked, what didn’t, and how to approach escalation without burning bridges. Hope this helps someone avoid months of unnecessary stress.
